What could I have done to stop this (NLHE)?
I played the Turbo Takedown today at pokerstars, and I was doing pretty well. After the first bubble burst ($90), we were nearing the 2nd tier when this hand occured:

blinds 1k/2k, medium sized antes.
Me: next to UTG, holding QQ. My stack is 24k. My plan was to fold everything in early position, and steal from late positions. Nobody had been calling my all-ins, so I was confident I could get a safe steal out of this.
UTG: 50k in chips. He bets 6k.
Now here I'm nervous about somebody behind us going over the top, so I just call. Everybody else folds.

Flop comes down: JJ7, two spades. UTG, acting first, bets 18k, putting me all in. I call, he flips over 88. turn and river comes out 10 and 9, giving him the winning straight, and dropping me out of the tourney. About 10 minutes later, the next tier bursts (I could have sat out and made it) and i end up losing an additional $60.

Is there any way I could have stopped this?

there's probably nothing you could have reasonably done to stop this...you are right in that the only way you could have won was to move in pre-flop, and i think there's a chance he would have folded getting not quite 2-1 on his money, but i would say the majority of players do call there with 8-8...and folding an overpair to a single bet on the flop when he could have A-K, A-Q, or a smaller pair, is just as much a non-option as folding pre-flop would be...bottom line, he got lucky on you, don't feel bad about your play
